Brad's, great-great grandparents, Carl Eric Lindholm and Johanna Nilsson were from Sweden. Our family has talked about Christmas traditions in Sweden before, but this was the first year we made Saffron Buns.
Saffron Buns get their name from the spice saffron. They are a traditional food eaten on December 13th, celebrating St. Lucia. We used a great recipe found at https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/st_lucia_saffron_buns/
They were fairly easy to make and the kids enjoyed shaping them. And of course, we listened to St. Lucia's Day music while making the buns.
Johanna Nilsson Lindholm probably participated in St. Lucia's Day as a girl in Sweden by wearing a white dress with a red sash and a wreath on top. Read about her at "Tell Their Stories" on the Home menu.
